"A show that will never sink in popularity"
Review
This 100 minute show (no interval) opens with the 8-strong cast walking into the auditorium and Layton Williams’ tour guide pointing out artefacts in the Titanic Museum. All good so far… and then Celine Dion herself appears.
Well no, not herself exactly, but the very excellent Lauren Drew, previously a WhatsonStage winner for best supporting artist in a musical.
Celine wants to reprise her role in the 1997 film of Titanic starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo di Caprio, until it’s pointed out she wasn’t actually *in* the film. What follows is then loosely based on the film with a hefty interjection of Celine (and some of her collaborators) thrown in for good measure.
Rose (the Winslet role) is played to perfection by Kat Ronney and the interaction between her and Jack (Rob Houchen) is fabulous. There are some ‘jokes’ which went completely over my head but this may be due to my great age but I enjoyed all the musical theatre references and utter craziness of the whole show.
The show is clearly a gentle send up and homage to the diva that is Celine Dion during which I wondered whether Celine has actually seen the show (it having originated in the US). A quick search tells me that although she hasn’t seen it her ‘people’ have and they understand that it’s a tribute rather than a dig.
Overall, not least bearing in mind we have no less than 3 members of West End theatre royalty in the cast (Houchen, Gage, Williams) the performances were superb! The acting was excellent and vocal performances all first rate. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of good clean fun and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
