Review
I had the pleasure of attending a wonderful performance of "The Further Adventures of Peter Pan" at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury, and I must say, it was a delightful experience that transported me back to the enchanting world of Neverland.
Starring the talented Bradley Riches as Peter Pan, the show had an infectious energy from the very start. Riches brought a youthful exuberance and charm to the role, embodying the spirit of adventure that Peter Pan is known for. His chemistry with the other cast members, particularly Leanne Garretty as Tinkerbell, was magical. Garretty's portrayal of Tinkerbell was not only whimsical but also filled with a surprising depth that added emotional resonance to the story, as she skated around the stage.
Mark Monaghan as Captain Hook delivered a fantastic performance. What a singing voice. He brought a perfect blend of menace and humour to this iconic pirate. His interactions with Smee, played by Andy Collins, provided some of the evening's most entertaining moments. Collins' comedic timing was spot on as usual and the audience goes wild as Andy brings out the Aylesbury’s famous ‘Bra made for Three’, making Smee a lovable and memorable character in his own right. But I must say, to see Andy Collins flying above the audience water pistols loaded and the audience trying their utmost to soak Andy was a highlight of the whole show.
Emma Jay Thomas was a standout as Mrs. Darling, and her dual role as Ethel Mermaid was executed seamlessly. She brought warmth and grace to both characters, grounding the more fantastical elements of the story. Maeve Byrne as Emily Darling the great granddaughter of Wendy Darling, brought the story up to date with her mobile phone and her social media. Maeve shone brightly, adding a heartfelt touch to the familial themes woven throughout the narrative.
The production itself was visually stunning, with excellent front projections, especially the Peter Pan and Emily Darling flying scene. The staging had vibrant set designs and imaginative costumes that truly brought Neverland to life. The choreography was lively and engaging, making excellent use of the stage space to create a sense of movement and excitement.
While the show had an issue with Peter Pan waiting to fly to close act one (Bless him) but he didn’t, the overall charm and talent of the cast more than compensated for this hitch.
The second act picked up wonderfully, culminating in a thrilling and heartwarming conclusion that left the audience cheering and on their feet. Shame we didn’t have a ‘Nanny’ Dame this year, but all was forgiven with the baby bells acted wonderfully by the stars of Allstars Academy and Castelli School of Dance. Also credit to the ensemble, who treated the audience to a gymnastic display. Well done. Tristan Crabtree, Shane Hampden, Jack Robbins, Charlotte Day, Molly Lewin, Jessie May Simmons, Charley Vincent and Ryan Webb.
Well doent eh creative team who put the show together, Excellent direction by Chris Nelson. Choreography by Adam Scott and Jamie Noar as Musical Director/Arranger.
In summary, "The Further Adventures of Peter Pan" at the Waterside Theatre is a must-see for families and fans of the classic tale alike and this further adventures production. With a talented cast and a visually captivating production, it’s an adventure that reminds us all of the importance of imagination and the magic of childhood. I would highly recommend catching this enchanting performance before it flies away!
