I, like many others, saw the movie of Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would this film adapt well to a stage musical? Yes! This musical absolutely lived up to everything I hoped it would be! Right from the first note of music this show sped along at a cracking pace with some wonderful performances!
The narrative moved from the girls walking the streets, to the Beverley Wiltshire, to the opera and that iconic shopping street, Rodeo Drive. Vivian, the Julia Roberts part from the movie was played brilliantly by Amber Davies. She was feisty, quirky and a vocal power house, and there was no doubt about why Edward, played by the handsome and suave Oliver Savile, fell in love with her. Vivian’s friend Kit de Luca, the street girl with attitude, was played exceptionally by Natalie Paris.
What a voice she had! In fact every performance was pretty faultless, but the star of the evening for me was Ore Oduba! He played the happy man on the streets and Mr Thompson at the Beverley Wiltshire. His slickness, his timing, his singing and dancing, the wonderful contrast he created between the two totally different characters; I could go on and on!
This show was high class from every point of view. The set, dominated by 4 illuminated double palm trees, was quite sparse but extremely effective and I particularly liked the fact that the scene changes were carried out by the company and choreographed to the music! I went with a friend and we were up on our feet clapping along at the end to Pretty Woman!
This show is at Milton Keynes for a couple of weeks and I would urge anyone who wants a good fun night out to get your tickets before they are snapped up. You won’t regret it!
