I didn’t see this musical when it was on in London and it is many years since I saw the film so I arrived at the Waterside with no preconceived ideas about what to expect. I was more and more delighted, therefore, as this beautiful show unfolded!
It’s the story of Molly and Sam who are very much in love and are set to spend the rest of their lives together. That is until Sam gets murdered in the street. There is a beautiful, sparkly lighting effect when Sam is meant to move on, however he resists and stays to try and solve the mystery of why he was killed. Josh St.Clair was a brilliant Sam. Good looking with a great voice, he made a wonderful partner for Rebekah Lowings who played Molly with charm and tenderness.
Jacqui Dubois played Oda Mae Brown, who many will remember was played in the film by Whoopi Goldberg. Jacqui was a worthy successor! She was very funny with a fantastic voice and provided the much needed light relief at just the right moments in the show. Carl Brunner, the friend of Molly and Sam who turned out to be somewhat less than loyal, was played by James Mateo-salt.
He handled his gradual fall from grace brilliantly as he became more and more desperate. There were two lovely cameo roles from Les Dennis as a ghost and a business tycoon. But one of the most spectacular performances came from Garry Lee as the Subway Ghost. He was dressed as a kind of rocker and his physicality was amazing as he manipulated the passengers on the subway train!
I really enjoyed this show which is on at The Waterside until Saturday 24th August and then goes on tour all over the country until April next year. So keep an eye open for it coming to a theatre near you because you really won’t want to miss it!
