Yes! It’s back! The scariest, funniest fright night in the West End! This is an excellent play, well written and with enough jumps, laughs and drama to keep you on the edge of your seat all evening. The twist at the end is brilliant but at the curtain call a sign goes up saying “ssssh don’t tell” so if you want to know what the twist is you will just have to come and see it for yourselves!
The performances are excellent. Stacey Dooley plays Jenny, the young mother who believes the house is haunted. As someone who is not normally associated with the theatre, I didn’t really know what to expect but she was excellent! She played with great understanding, scared, angry, funny and utterly believable!
Joe McFadden plays her husband Sam who doesn’t really believe her stories about the noises and footsteps. He is a more down to earth scientist. He made an excellent foil for Dooley and as their relationship falls apart over his scepticism you are really willing him to be more understanding of her.
Lauren, played by Donna Air is Sam’s friend from uni. She’s a councillor by trade and believes Jenny. Air is also someone who I don’t associate with the theatre but she does an excellent job of playing the slightly drunk, quiz loving friend. James Buckley is excellent as Lauren’s jack-the-lad partner, Ben who provides many of the laughs throughout the play but by the end of the play is out of his depth. This is such a well constructed piece.
It moves seamlessly between laughter, anger, sadness and some very scary moments indeed. I don’t know whether Danny Robins has any plans to write another play, but if he does, I am going to be at the front of queue on opening night!
