Milton Keynes was my destination once more for a musical I was already excited to see. Tina The Tina Turner Musical. I have to say here and now. Wow! What a show and what a performance! The whole theatre was packed, and you therefore know you’re in a for a treat.
The casting is nothing short of extraordinary. Tina is shared by two performers Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy and Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi (in the role we saw) Elle embodies Tina Turner with breath taking authenticity. Her vocal range is phenomenal, capturing every gritty growl and soaring note that defined Turner’s sound, while her stage presence is magnetic – from the early days of shy Anna Mae Bullock to the unstoppable Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, she brings every moment to life with heart and fire. We watched as she grew in confidence to make Tina what she was a Superstar!

The supporting cast matches her energy perfectly. Lola McCourtie as the young Anna Mae Bullock (Tina) was a little firecracker. What a performance (One to watch) David King Yombo as Ike Turner delivers a complex portrayal that balances charisma and menace, creating genuine dramatic tension. The ensemble dancers move with incredible precision, their choreography paying homage to the era while feeling fresh and dynamic. The live band, with their surprise finale being positioned prominently on stage, drives every number with infectious rhythm that pulses through the venue.
The set design is ingenious, with evocative projections to seamlessly transport us from Nutbush, Tennessee to recording studios, concert stages, and international arenas. The lighting design deserves special praise – bold spotlights, vibrant colour washes, and dramatic shadows create a visual feast that mirrors the emotional journey of the story.
Costume design is another highlight, with each outfit capturing the evolution of Tina’s style from modest dresses to the legendary leather mini-skirts and high heels that became her trademark. Every detail feels carefully considered and authentic to the period.
While featuring all of Tina’s greatest hits – including "Proud Mary", "What’s Love Got to Do with It", and "Simply the Best" – the musical never feels like just a jukebox compilation. The book by Katori Hall, Frank Ketelaar, and Kees Prins delves deep into Tina’s challenging personal life, her struggles with abuse, and her remarkable journey to reclaim her identity and career. It’s a moving, unflinching portrait that adds profound weight to every song.
The musical arrangements stay true to the original recordings while being thoughtfully adapted for the stage, ensuring each number serves the narrative as much as it entertains. The finale alone is worth the ticket price – a full-throttle performance that had the whole theatre singing and dancing along.
I have to say that the Milton Keynes Theatre provides the perfect setting for this spectacular production. The sightlines are excellent from all levels, the sound quality is crystal clear, and staff are warm and efficient. The theatre’s spacious foyers and well-stocked bars make for a comfortable pre-show experience, and ushers are on hand to ensure everything runs smoothly.
This production is a must-see for any fan of Tina Turner, but even those who only know her biggest hits will be captivated by the powerful story and extraordinary performances. It’s a triumphant celebration of a true legend that leaves you feeling inspired and exhilarated.
Have you been to see any other musicals at Milton Keynes Theatre, or are you planning to catch Tina during its run there? If not, then please change your mind. What a show!
