"A tense, thriller from an excellent novel"

John le Carré’s taut espionage thriller is brought to the stage at Milton Keynes with obvious respect for its source material, yet the production feels weighed down by choices that keep it from truly taking flight. Read on to find out why.

First, the positives: Ralph Little is outstanding in the central role, capturing Alec Leamas’ world-weariness, quiet bitterness and flickering resolve with real skill, holding the stage even when the script threatens to overwhelm him. The rest of the cast too delivers solid, committed performances, making the most of every moment they get.

Sound (Elizabeth Purnell) and lighting design (Azusa Ono) are excellent throughout – subtle shifts, sharp ambient effects and precise lighting states did far more to build tension and atmosphere than much of the dialogue did. In fact, so dominant is the word-heavy narrative and so unnecessary some staging choices feel, this could easily have worked as a radio play. But good direction by Jeremy Herrin.

The biggest issue is just how relentlessly verbose it is. Scene after scene is packed with dense, lengthy monologues and layers of exposition, tense silences, with little breathing room or visual momentum. If you haven’t familiarised yourself with the complex plot in advance, keeping track of loyalties, double-crosses and shifting motivations would be almost impossible. and some of the audiences had drifted off by the noises some were making.

Matters weren’t helped by a significant distraction during the performance in the second act. There was a persistent disturbance in the stalls which pulled focus repeatedly, making it even harder to follow the already dense narrative. Also the staff's walkie-talkie chatter was clearly audible throughout during this disruption. It became loud enough to cut through dialogue and break the tense mood entirely.

Well done to the actors on the stage who had obviously heard the commotion but carried on regardless. Professional to the core.

It remains a good production, anchored by strong acting and impeccable technical craft, but it’s overburdened by its own script and undermined by preventable disruptions. A large theatre like the Milton Keynes holds too many audience members, who with the slightest laps of concentration could quite easily, get lost through the dialogue and lose concentration and therefore get distracted.

Hence the various distractions from audience members with various phones bleeping and sweet wrappers being opened loudly.

If you are a big fan of John le Carré’s and can find it in a smaller, intimate theatre, then this show is for you. It tries to cram a lot in for the time it has. The second act requires the most attention with the court scene, which seems to unravel the plot really well. Well done cast and creatives. A good attempt with such complex material.
