What a wonderful evening we had at Milton Keynes last night watching this fabulous production of The Bodyguard! The story is a good one - an iconic singer is being stalked by a dangerous psychopath and she falls in love with the bodyguard employed to protect her.
I have seen the show several times and while I have always enjoyed it up to a point it has never been one of my favourites. But last night all that changed! The cast, the classy production values, the music, the lighting, every bit of this show was wonderful! I loved the slightly sparse set with minimal furniture and beautiful drapes that looked brilliant under the clever lighting.
The cast were all excellent, led by the superb Sidonie Smith playing superstar Rachel Marron. It is a difficult part to pull off because everyone has the film in their head with Whitney Houston. Sidonie is, however a worthy successor! Bodyguard Frank Farmer was played by Adam Garcia. He is so famous for being a song and dance man that it was lovely to see him playing a part very well that didn’t need either! There were many other stand out performances, chief among them being Sasha Monique playing Rachel’s sister Nicki and a very scary James-Lee Harris playing The Stalker!
But a very special accolade must go to 10 year old Rio Chigwedere playing Rachel’s son Fletcher! He danced along with the adult ensemble and had a bit of solo break dancing. He also had a great singing voice and an acting ability beyond his years. He is definitely one to watch for the future!
This great production is on until Saturday 25th October so book your tickets quickly to avoid disappointment. But a word of warning, hold on tight to your drink through the show as there are a few jumps and you could end up wearing it on your shirt instead of drinking it like I did!
