I went along to Milton Keynes Theatre expecting great things from Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures company – and The Car Man exceeded every single one of them, earning every one of these five stars and more. Full credit to the incredible dancers. It was a hot night in the theatre, but they just kept going.
From the moment the curtain rises, you’re completely drawn into Harmony with its 735 residents. A sun-baked, sultry 1960s roadside diner, where every glance, every step, and every rev of an engine tells a story. Bourne’s signature blend of sharp storytelling, breath taking choreography, and bold imagination is on full display here – this isn’t just dance, it’s drama at its most vivid and visceral. The way he weaves together passion, betrayal, lust and fate feels fresh, modern and utterly gripping, with not a single word spoken yet every emotion crystal clear.

The entire cast is phenomenal. The lead performances have such raw power and chemistry, their movement shifting effortlessly from tender intimacy to explosive tension. The ensemble work is flawless too – perfectly synchronised, packed with personality, and bringing every corner of this small desert town to vivid life. Special mention must go to the set design – the transformable garage and diner is ingenious, and the lighting and sound design crank up the atmosphere from hazy heat to heart-pounding suspense.
The score – reimagined from Bizet’s Carmen – pulses with energy, driving the story forward and matching every beat of the dancers perfectly. There are moments that will make you hold your breath, others that will make your heart race, and a finale that leaves you utterly stunned. Raunchy and fun packed.
This production is bold, sexy, thrilling and completely unforgettable. We were on the edge of our seats from start to finish, and left Milton Keynes Theatre buzzing – I can guarantee some of you will be planning to book tickets to see it again. Whether you’re a lifelong dance fan or new to Bourne’s work, The Car Man is an absolute must-see, with a clever twist at the end.
