It’s panto season - oh yes it is! And what better way to start the celebrations than with a fun filled production of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Waterside in Aylesbury! There is plenty of scope for effects in this story of the boy who goes up the beanstalk to the home of the Giant in the sky and Aylesbury didn’t disappoint!
From the enormous beanstalk that rose out of the stage and disappeared to the top of the theatre to the massive 3D giant who hit members of the audience with his imaginary club, this production is exactly what you want in a pantomime! The company were also just what was wanted in a pantomime - lots of energy and fun.
Well known BBC Three Counties breakfast show presenter Andy Collins was a great Silly Simon, just a bit simple, full of witty one liners and lots of running around in the second act to keep him fit over Christmas! Dame Dot Trott was perfectly played by the highly experienced Leon Craig. The list of Dames he as played is massive and he was excellent from start to finish!
Jack Trott and Jill Pickle, the two young leads, played by Joe Sleight and Emma Crossley respectively, were just right, charming and full of energy. Shani Cantor was The Spirit of the Beans. She was a lovely fairy with a really excellent voice.
But for me, the villain is always my favourite and this year it was the fabulous Nigel Harman playing Fleshcreep, the Giant’s henchman. He was stylishly evil with a lovely turn of humour. He’s also got a great voice! I loved him!
All in all it was a wonderful evening of fun and if the shouting and laughter of of the audience is anything to go by, its going to be a fabulous Christmas! Jack and the Beanstalk runs until Sunday 4th January but book your tickets quickly because this show is going to be a big big hit - oh yes it is!
