Who doesn’t love a bit of Step?
Tragedy, 5 6 7 8, and many other songs were clapped and danced along to last night at Milton Keynes Theatre when a packed audience enjoyed the Steps musical Here and Now. The show isn’t actually about Steps the group, its a completely standalone musical about a group of workers trying to save their Supermarket from being redeveloped into luxury apartments.
But all the music belongs to Steps and the excellent cast sang and danced the songs to perfection. The four main characters were very well played by Lara Denning as Caz, Jacqui Dubois as Vel, Rosie Singha as Neeta and Blake Patrick Anderson as Robbie. There were some excellent cameos too from, among others, drag artist River Medway as Jem, who falls in love with with Robbie and Chris Grahamson who plays Caz’s cheating husband.
Obviously the music and dancing in the show was wonderful but, as with many “juke box” musicals, it is easy to feel that the story and script have been slightly forced in to fit the songs. But that didn’t spoil the enjoyment of the evening as everyone was up and dancing at the end of the show to a great Steps megamix!
Here and Now runs at Milton Keynes until 4th April and then moves to Blackpool Opera House, Norwich Theatre Royal, New Theatre Hull, Leicester Curve, Grand Theatre Leeds, and the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury. Catch it if you can! It’s a really good fun evening!
