Romeo and Juliet with a twist! That was what was on offer at Milton Keynes Theatre last night in the shape of the West End hit & Juliet.
It’s a reimagining of the great Shakespeare play where Juliet doesn’t actually take the poison and so continues on to have a relationship with someone else. Two of the main protagonists are Shakespeare himself and his wife Anne Hathaway who battle with each other to change the story and bring about a happy ending. Jay McGuiness an Lara Denning were both excellent in these roles, bringing high energy and a good deal of humour to the show. Sandra Marvin playing Angelique gave a standout performance. She is a real powerhouse performer and very funny! I loved her.
There were several people covering parts but they all did a very good job. I also loved the whole look of the show with its nod to Steam Punk and lots of fabulous effects! The show was great fun and the audience absolutely loved it. I am not normally very keen on so called juke box musicals, where existing hits are imported into a show instead of original music, but it worked very well in this show!
It’s on at Milton Keynes all week and anyone who wants a great evening out should get some tickets now while there are still some left! Another nice touch was a question and answer session held after the show for ATG+ members. Unfortunately I was unable to stay for this but I know that ATG often hold events at all their venues so if you are a serious theatre goer it may be worth looking into becoming a member as ATG have theatres all over the country.
& Juliet is on tour until July and is going to Nottingham Theatre Royal, Birmingham Hippodrome, Southend Cliffs Pavilion, Stoke Regent Theatre, Sheffield Lyceum Theatre, Newcastle Theatre Royal, Truro Hall for Cornwall and Cardiff Millennium Centre.
